While K-12 schools worldwide place great emphasis on academic rigor, sadly their working model as it exists today fails to address the most basic developmental needs of children and teens, that being the acquisition of strong social skills and enjoying a sense of belonging to a community or group. As a result of these school failing, many if not most students never manage to find that supportive social net that schools must provide. In such settings, students either go unnoticed by their schools by maintaining a low profile or opt to become rebellious in a show of rejection. Either way, schools carry on functioning as normal, sideling students that become quietly isolated and ejecting students that become disruptive. Unlike traditional schools, Scholae™ is a school encampment, a collective student club that puts great emphasis on providing a social network and platform for students first, and a robust academic program second!
Day Scholae™ vs. Day School
Ever wonder why students enjoy summer school and holiday camps more than they do regular school? School encampments focus on breaking the ice, having students meet and make new friends, and enjoy being together. The mission shifts from delivering academic lessons to having students play together, hang out together, eat together, and enjoy outings together; so, when the time comes for them to study together, learning becomes just another enjoyable activity! That is precisely what our Scholae™ in Dubai has been delivering since 2001. Scholae™ puts camp spirit back into day schooling but just like in any day school, the academic year still runs from September to July and classes run from Sunday to Thursday from 08.00am till 03.00pm. The main difference remains in the settings, environment and the delivery methods that two decades later remain unique to Scholae™.
Curriculum
Scholae™ utilizes a K-12 American curriculum supplied by iCademy Middle East. iCademy is fully licensed by the Dubai Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and internationally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). While Scholae™ recognizes iCademy as a school that delivers one of the most rigorous academic programmes, our use of this curriculum is NOT the Unique Selling Proposition (USP) of Scholae™. We only use this form of schooling to ensure that Scholae™ students are fully compliant with local education laws and regulations. This ensures that Scholae™ students are issued school report cards that are recognized locally and internationally and nothing more than that. For parents who wish their children to study the UK curriculum at secondary school, Scholae™ offers the Harrow School Online sixth form leading to the completion of A-levels. Whichever curriculum parents opt for, what remains unique about Scholae™ is that classes in English, World Languages Math, Sciences, Music, Art, Physical Education, and many other subjects are all delivered in-person within a social atmosphere on campus, in settings that are quite different to a typical school and more in line with a social club. While every student enjoys their very own personalized self-paced academic program, teachers and students work together as one, helping each other as one big family.
